Fluoride Treatments in Collierville TNThere has been a surge in tooth decay for a certain population in the U.S. over the past five years. And it is occurring in an unlikely age group. The Center for Disease Control is reporting a rise in the number of preschoolers with cavities. Preschoolers. Most dentists across the country agree with this report, saying that they have seen a rise in the number of preschoolers with 6 to 10 cavities, sometimes even more than that! This is the first time in 40 years that the numbers have risen for this age category.Because of this unfortunate information, we always stress the importance of fluoride in dental care, not just for children but adults of all ages!

What is Fluoride?

Fluoride is an element that is found naturally in soil, foods, some minerals and even water. This element has been known to decrease cavities. Since the 1930’s fluoride has been added to community water after reports showed that those who drink fluoridated water had less cavities than those who did not. Fluoride works by preventing bad bacteria’s ability to stick to our teeth. If bacteria cannot stick to teeth it is easily washed away by saliva or brushing. When bacteria cannot stay in one place, it cannot produce acid that erodes our enamel, creating cavities.

Where to Find Fluoride

Most parents do not understand that even toddlers need to brush their teeth twice a day. Because children under 7 or 9 years cannot properly brush yet, it is important that a parent uses a small amount of fluoride toothpaste to brush their child’s teeth twice a day. Also, a child should visit a dentist before their first birthday to assess their risk of cavities. Toothpastes are a great source of fluoride. Additionally, drinking fluoridated tap water can help prevent cavities in children’s teeth. However, the best source of this element is found in professional strength fluoride treatments at your dentist’s office. During these treatments, fluoride is applied directly to the tooth usually with a rinse. It takes very little time to complete the treatment and is painless. Depending on your oral health status, our dentist may suggest repeating this treatment every 3, 6 or 12 months.
